Solidarity & Stewardship

ACTS Battambang

Battambang is the second largest city in Cambodia and is at the heart of the rice production region of the country. It is one of the poorest regions of Cambodia but it is also where the largest and oldest Catholic community in the country is found.

Since 2011, ACTS has been going on annual missions trips to Battambang, with around 180 participants each year. Through the years, we have gotten to know and love the community there, but for a second year running, we are unable to travel to Cambodia due to the Covid19 pandemic. Undeterred though, we have continued to run our missions remotely.

Mission 2021

After enduring the Covid19 pandemic for over a year, the community in Battambang are at a brink. The situation in Battambang is not so much a medical crisis but an economic one, where job losses are the main issue and this has impacted food security to families the most.

From our conversations with the community there, we found out that their most pressing need this year is food aid.

So although our missions typically focus on medical, education and works, this year's mission calls for a different focus – a mission to get food aid to our Cambodian friends in need.

Solidarity & Stewardship

We saw that because we cannot physically be in Battambang, this year’s mission will have to rally together people with different resources and skills, to find new ways to support the Battambang community remotely from right here in Singapore. Certainly, Covid19 has taught us that we need to be adaptable. It has also spurred some of us to try new things and even excel in them!

Hence the mission team this year decided that the theme for this year’s mission will be SOLIDARITY & STEWARDSHIP.

As ACTS is A-Call-To-Share, it is our hope that the mission’s various projects and activities which our resourceful missioners have come up with, to enable us to provide food aid to the Battambang community, can be a platform for us to share our different gifts, talents, time and resources with one another as God's Stewards of all that He has blessed each of us with. We also hope that in working together on these projects, our participants will find meaning in giving from a place of Solidarity with our Cambodian friends.

We had called these projects Fundraising Projects in Phase 1 of mission 2021 from Sept-Oct. In Phase 2 of mission 2021, with the funds just about raised, we can now call them Stewardship Projects, driven in Solidarity with our Cambodian friends.

What's been happening?

Each of mission 2021’s Stewardship Projects involves activities or creative products thought up by our missioners as ground up efforts to raise support and funding for our food aid and other programmes for this year’s mission.

These Stewardship Projects range from the healthy (walkathon) and green (grow-your-own-food), to the youthful (t-shirts & tote bags), the creative (children’s books, Christmas crafts, gifts and advent wreath making workshops) as well as delectable (private dining and lemonade) and the artistic (music video and mission montage). Our Teams will come together over the next few months to bring these projects to fruition.

Our Stewardship Projects are the heartbeat and essence of ACTS Battambang Mission 2021, because they bring people together in participation towards a common purpose for the good of another, they bring people together in community and they give us a means to let our Cambodian friends know that they are worthy of our time and efforts because they are loved – that is the journey of every ACTS mission.
